SECTION 1.

Sir,

Sir Edward Grey to the Marquis de Soveral.

Foreign Office, May 14, 1909. WITH reference to my note of the 12th instant, I have the honour to inform you that I have received a further telegram from Elis Majesty's Minister at Peking, dated the 12th instant, on the subject of Macao.

Sir J. Jordan reports that he has made strong representations at an interview at the Wai-wa Pu, and has warned that body that they were assuming serious responsi- bility in allowing negotiations, failure of which might entail the intervention of His Majesty's Government, to be prejudiced by the action of a provincial body.

In reply the Wai-wu Pu stated that an altogether excessive degree of importance was being attached by the Portuguese to this agitation; they promised, however, to telegrapli to the Viceroy that it should be controlled.

The Wai-wa Pu also assured His Majesty's Minister that they had carried out the Lisbon Agreement faithfully, and have since forwarded him a copy of a telegram from the Viceroy, dated the 13th February, in which his Excellency reported that the military post in question had been withdrawn.
